Art of the Week: Stories behind the art | #3

Published 3 months ago • 1 min read

hey there! Happy Wednesday!

There has always been a debate in the art world over tracing. Is it cheating? Is is totally fine? Does it hold you back? Help you? It's simply a tool like a grid, an eraser, or a pen. Tracing can help you get a feel of where things should be placed. But as it's a tool, I see it as something that you do sometimes and freehand other times. Sometimes you free-hand a picture, then trace it, then freehand a again.

Today was one of those days that proved that point. So often we trace and forget the freehanding part of learning to draw. But today I stood at the front of the class and freehand drew a goat that they followed along with. It's been years of practice, tracing, freehand drawing, trying things over again, grid enlargements, and more drawing again. No matter what you do, you have to practice with a variety of methods to get good at a skill.

My horse drawings are also great examples of this. I've done so many drawings and paintings of horses (10 times more than what you see on a curated social media feed), that I've experimented with mediums, forms, methods, and more to create. Now it's easier to design each one.

This is Fire N' Ice, a horse portrait that was drawn on 18x24 inch paper. One of my largest drawings to date. You can find her as a print, a poster, a tote bag and more.

Until next time,
