Art of the Week: Stories behind the art | #4

Published 2 months ago • 2 min read

hey there! Happy Wednesday!

You've heard the saying "The grass isn't always greener on the other side". I think that's how it goes anyway. You get the idea. This is one of those times when I realized that I should have just stayed where I was.

When I first started doing prints, I was using Fine Art America because that's what one of my favorite artists was using. But I wasn't making much money off of it. So when I came across Redbubble, it piqued my interest. A little shiny object syndrome of course. I jumped over to Redbubble, and while I like the vibe, it's not really my business vibe. I never sold anything with Redbubble - so even less than I'd been making before I made the switch.

Here's what I learned and what I continue to learn in business and life:

  • It doesn't matter where you are, you have to market. Even when you're on a large platform that does it's own marketing, you won't get by without also promoting your own items.
  • Another platform might look shiny and new, and wicked fun, but oftentimes they do the same thing, they just do it differently.
  • Your items need to be where your market is. They have to fit the vibe of the platform. There will be a wide array of art on each platform, but your work, your customers, and the platform all need to align.
  • Stick to one thing, and persist. I'm a jack of all trades, but sometimes you've got to narrow down and have a focus. If you've got 100 different things going on, you can't get very far in any one thing.
  • I can have art on multiple platforms, but if I don't market any of those platforms, then they won't do anything.

The Great Horned Owl of 2018. Colored pencil on paper, he's ready for a flight. On the way to school the past few days we've seen smaller owls (not the horned owl) flying across the road which has brought up a discussion of owls quite often. I still truly love this design. It's one of many that can be found on my new Fine Art America Account.

Until next time,
